In my last Plugged in blogpost I explored how record labels are making money from their official videos on YouTube and Vevo. So far, however, songwriters including myself have received next to no money from their collection societies, despite getting millions in some cases hundreds of millions of views.
This is not only unfair, but unsustainable. A new licensing deal with the company is now being finalised, and sources close to the negotiations claim it will be better. But songwriters may be missing out on YouTube ad revenue that they can rightly claim, including from user-generated content UGC.
This licence is granted directly by songwriters and publishers. As they own the right to the actual composition they can also claim ad revenue from videos of YouTube users performing covers of their songs. Of course few people posting content on YouTube know they need songwriterw a licence — and those who do would most likely not know how can songwriters make money to get in touch with the rights holder.
Hence, songwriters or their publishers have to «claim» their songs. Once they make the claim, they have to specify what type of ads they want served with the video. A first step would be the abolition of these prohibitive non-disclosure agreements.

Songwriter royalties are the only income stream in America dictated by the Federal Government! Songwriters cannot increase their mechanical and performance royalty income even if the cost of doing business increases. A songwriter may go years without receiving royalties. If they ca a hit song, the Federal Government says that the songwriter must receive royalties immediately after they are collected. This means a songwriter might receive most of their income from a song in one calendar year — making that income subject to a disproportionately high income-tax levy. Other creators, such as book authors, can negotiate the terms of their payments over several years for tax purposes — but NOT songwriters! Songwriters were once allowed to average their incomes.
