An absorbing puzzle in murder when it was first made in»The Glass Key,» the new remake of the Dashiell Hammett thriller, still has some of the fascination dic the original, despite its unevenness. The motivations of Mr. Hammett’s original characters are sometimes more than a little askew, but moneey sleight of hand is so expert that one only occasionally realizes one is being cheated; his characters speak in a terse, telegraphic style that blends well with violence. Unfortunately for the new film at the Criterion, it sags under the endless complexity of Mr. Hammett’s plot. All too often it paralyzes the adaptor by the necessity for exposition, and at those points the sleight of hand fails and the characters become no more than puppets in 1953 bizarre pattern.

A salty tale of violence and secret murder, it has been excellently produced in the Paramount studios, and it becomes as crisply exciting a melodrama as Broadway has seen lately. You may recall that when the murder films seemed in danger of being too grave in their study of the amiable art of mass slaughter, Mr. Hammett’s «The Thin Man» began the cycle of what may be called the hilarious homicide school of crime fiction. Now, just when we were beginning to fear that the imitators of «The Thin Man» were becoming overly jocose on the subject of assassination, Mr. Hammett comes along with proof that murder isn’t necessarily funny. And what, you may want to know, is a glass key? It seems to be an underworld figure of speech for an invitation which is motivated by expediency rather than genuine friendliness. A popular ward-heeling politician, Mr. Edward Arnold, is doing all right for himself until he decides to go in for clean politics and joins forces with a Senator who is seeking re-election. George Raft, his crafty lieutenant, is skeptical about the rewards of virtue, but likes his boss so much that he agrees to string along with him. Arnold promptly makes a powerful enemy by closing down the gambling club of an underworld czar. When the respectable Senator’s son is mysteriously murdered, the hoodlum spreads the story that Mr.

Arnold had the boy removed because of his attentions to his daughter. That being approximately the situation, Mr. Hammett and the scenarists develop it from climax to climax in a series of absorbing revelations. It is one of the particular charms of the mystery that the underworld is as anxious as the upperworld to trap the killer. Every one suspects his neighbor, and as far as motive and circumstance go they might all be right. Thus, when Mr.

I really enjoyed this and prefer it to the version of the film. George Raft was especially good here, but the whole thing was more believable than the better known remake.
